Request #1 - Smiley Smile (Sortastereo)

Request #1: Smiley Smile in stereo (256 kbps)

Now, it's impossible to do a "true stereo" mix of Smiley Smile. So this is some kind of "fake stereo" version... Hence its name, "sortastereo"!

These mixes are really good, and you'll be able to fully enjoy them as the files are 256 kbps mp3s.

I don't remember where/who I got this from, so if you'd like to be credited, just drop your name in the comments!

Alternate links: #2 / #3 / #4 / #5 / #6

EDIT

It seems there actually is a true stereo mix of Smiley Smile, called the "Maximus Mix". Someone kindly gave me a link to it in the comments, and I'm putting it here for you. Enjoy!

Hi,here i leave a link to Jacob's Blog that has a Smiley Smile - Wild Honey stereo version with bonus tracks. When I listened to the "Maximus" mix I thought it was the same true stereo mix, but comparing Good Vibrations in Maximus mix it seems mono and worst than the original, and this one and the one on sortastereo are really great. http://bootlegz.blogspot.com/search?q=smiley+smile+stereo

I'm not sure why you'd consider the 'good vibrations' mono in any way.. the seperation was mixed at 10:00 and 2:00.. you can clearly hear the toms on the left channel etc etc.. the tracks used in the mix were vocal-1 (Lead- mono) vocal-2 (the backups-Stereo).. vocal-3 (the originally never used add-ins i.e insert vocals -stereo) The instrumental base track (Stereo) and the unused original instrumental addins (Stereo) !

the rest of the mixes were either done by ME, - PERSONALLY, or i assisted.. altrhough i DO believe that later versions of this have ended up with a couple of official stereo remixes

Actually, as a side note.. the reason I don't do this in my off time any more is precisely! because all my mixes have shown up everywhere else as other's...

Ouch - I can definitely understand that!

Thanks for your input and for your work Maximus! :)

Hey Maximus, I didn't mean to be rude. I just gave the example of that song because I liked it more the versions in the others stereo bootlegs, and I said that compared to those this one "seemed" mono.
But the other tracks are pretty good, and the ones from surfin' safari and various others in your post too.

The Maximus stereo mix is an outstanding piece of work. I never, ever liked SS (I could *appreciate* it, but that's not the same think) before I heard the two stereo mixes now "out there". I've just done an a/b on GV, and the Maximus mix is considerably less shrill, with more depth.
Thanks, Max - wherever you are! SS is now my most-played BB album.

maximus replies... Thank you kindly for your comments, er.. '." ..well whoever U are.. i spenmt most of my life either doing gigs and /or in front of a mixing console.. and yet (incredibly!) didn't Completely thrash my ears... so im HEAR those 'harsh ' overtonesand can't stand them.. (another engineer that shares my sentiments , incidentally, is Steve Hoffman.. keep a look out for his fine remastering jobs.. they;re all over in the 60s Reissues RM's)

Was it mine that you were wanting Flac? if so reply here and i'll see what i can do (mine are all AIFF currently....)

maximus: i would totally be pleased to hear your stereo version of smiley smile in lossless.
i'm currently working on an instrumental alternate stereo version of heroes and villains.

well.. i'm currently unearthing all my multitrack files.. where all my lossless BB mixed s are.. natch..
i took all the tapes i had and converted them to digital.. and backed them up on DVD.. ..but ..they got .. er.. injured.. so im doing as best a restore as i can..
So far though.. i've had a real difficult time telling which is the official new stereo remixes and which are mine (i always prefer.. out of respect for the engineer, to only have a copy of the official stereo remix.. and destroy mine once there is one..
Cant tell which is which though...

hmm... sounds interesting. Keep up the good work and hopefully you will get them back together.

Finally I made an alternate version of "Hereos And Villains", which is quite different from other mixes I've heard so far. My opinion about the official version is that Brian highly overproduced "Heroes And Villains". If you listen to the instrumental parts, then you will hear its complex arrangement quality.
My favourite part is the powerful bassline and of course the flutter horn. Unfortunately most of my bootleg collection isn't lossless, so you'll hear in some parts it's loss of quality. Anyway, give it a try and let me know your opintion:

Thanks for the link for the Sortastereo mix. Could you post a new link for the Maximus mix? It's telling me it's a dead file.
